Diageo Completes Sale of East African Breweries to Asahi in $2.3 Billion Deal

In a major regional corporate transaction, Diageo has completed the sale of its 65 percent stake in East African Breweries Limited (EABL) including its controlling interest in Kenyan subsidiary UDVK (United Distillers Vintners Kenya)  to Japan’s Asahi Group for US $2.3 billion.

The deal marks a strategic exit for Diageo from its African beer operations, aligning with its global portfolio rationalisation plan.

Asahi highlighted EABL’s strong market position and brand portfolio as key strategic assets that will expand its footprint across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Industry analysts said the transaction could bring fresh capital and international management focus to the regional beverages sector, while reinforcing investor interest in East African corporate assets.

The acquisition is expected to close in the coming months pending regulatory approvals.
