Ministry of Health: Kenyans Are Overdosing On Diclofenac

The painkiller diclofenac is sold under several brand names in the U.S. and abroad, including Voltaren.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) of the Ministry of Health has issued a warning about the misuse of Diclofenac, one of the most widely used painkillers in the country.

The board stated in a statement released on Friday, May 20, that the public was overusing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief.

It was stressed that Diclofenac, when taken in large doses for long periods of time, is linked to an elevated risk of blood clots in the arteries, particularly in individuals with underlying heart or circulation disorders or specific cardiovascular risk factors.

“In some cases, it has led to heart attack or stroke.

“Diclofenac is a widely used medicine for relieving pain and inflammation, particularly in painful conditions such as arthritis. Overall, the benefits of diclofenac are greater than its risks,” PPB warned.

Individuals who use large amounts (150 mg daily) for lengthy periods of time are at danger of heart attack and stroke, according to the board.

Patients having a history of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, blockages in blood vessels to the heart or brain, or who have undergone surgery to clear or bypass such blockages, or circulatory disorders that restrict blood flow to the limbs are no longer advised to use the medicine.

Before administering the medicine to people who smoke or have other risk factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, doctors should weigh the dangers.

“If you are on long-term Diclofenac treatment, you will need to have your treatment reviewed to ensure that it is still right for you.

“You are advised to speak to your prescriber at your next scheduled appointment,” the Ministry advised.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) is responsible for disseminating information on medical items to health professionals and the general public in order to encourage their sensible use.
