Didmus Barasa, the newly elected MP for Kimilili, is set to enter a plea in a murder case.
Barasa, who has been in police custody for 14 days, is accused of killing Brian Olunga, a Kimilili politician’s aide, on August 9.
He was detained in Kisumu cells, where he virtually appeared in court, and the court granted police the right to detain him for two weeks before his plea hearing on August 24.
This was done to allow police to perform a postmortem on the body and collect other evidence for the case. He was also subjected to medical examinations.
According to officials, he will enter a plea in a Kakamega court.
“We couldn’t charge him in Bungoma for obvious security reasons,” said the officers.
An autopsy on Olunga’s body revealed that he died as a result of a pistol bullet to the right side of his head.
According to preliminary findings, the incident occurred when an altercation between the two occurred, prompting Khaemba to leave and head to his car.
“Barasa followed him with four men and ordered them not to let him (Khaemba) leave the area, but Khaemba’s driver Joshua Nasokho defied the order and ignited the vehicle,” police said.
Barasa then drew his pistol, aimed at Khaemba’s aide Olunga, and shot him in the forehead, killing him on the spot.
It has been revealed that the two had an altercation the day before the shooting.
Police had previously withdrawn the weapon, but the MP went to court and obtained an order reinstating the weapon he is suspected of using in the incident.
