DIG Lagat Welcomes NPS Athletes Home After Tokyo Triumph

The Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Mr Eliud Lagat, yesterday received National Police Service athletes at Vigilance House following their return from the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. He welcomed the contingent on behalf of Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

The delegation included star performers led by Corporal Beatrice Chebet, who delivered a stellar double victory in the 10,000m and 5,000m, winning two gold medals for Kenya. The team also featured celebrated names such as Faith Kipyegon, the Tokyo 2025 and world 1,500m champion, who doubles as a board member of the Administration Police Service Bomet FC, as well as veteran athletes Abel Kirui and Ambassador Dr Rose Tata.

The group was supported by a strong technical bench under Ms Catherine Kagwiria, SSP, and a spirited cheering squad led by Corporal Michael Maina of the General Service Unit. Trainers and medical personnel also travelled with the team.

Kenya’s overall haul from Tokyo stood at 11 medals — seven gold, two silver and two bronze. DIG Lagat congratulated the athletes for upholding Kenya’s dominance on the global stage, praising the coaching staff for their critical role in preparing the team.

He urged current and former athletes within the Police Service to remain mentors for upcoming talent, emphasising discipline and compliance with anti-doping standards to safeguard both their careers and the country’s international reputation.

In recognition of her historic double victory, Corporal Chebet has been recommended for promotion to the rank of Sergeant.
