Former U.S. President Donald Trump has congratulated Pope Leo XIV following his historic election on Thursday, calling it a “great honor” for the United States as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost becomes the first American-born Pontiff.
Taking to his Truth Social platform shortly after white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel—signaling the end of the conclave—Trump celebrated the moment as one of national pride.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope,” he posted.
“What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
Speaking to reporters later at the White House, Trump admitted he was “a little bit surprised” by the choice but reiterated the prestige of the moment for the U.S.
He revealed that communications had already been established with the Vatican and that a presidential visit is expected.
Vice President J.D. Vance, a Catholic convert, also offered congratulations on X, praising the election as a proud day for American Catholics.
Born in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV previously served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.
In his first address, he urged the faithful to “build bridges” and participate in global peace efforts.
The election of Pope Leo XIV marks a defining moment in the history of the Catholic Church and in U.S.-Vatican relations.
