Dongo Kundu Bypass Project Gets Kes 56 Billion Funding

Kenya has acquired Kes 56 billion in grants and loans from Japan to construct the Dongo Kundu Bypass project.

Trade Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria said the resettlement process of the project-affected persons at the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone will start.

“I was informed that the Dongo Kundu Bypass (Mombasa) construction is coming along well and is expected to be completed by March 2024. This road is crucial in opening up the Dongo Kundu Special Zone to investors,” he said.

He spoke at a meeting with Japanese Ambassador Ken Okaniwa on Wednesday, saying that the funding will ensure the project’s success.

“I have also requested the Japanese government to support the Numerical Machining Complex, which seeks to be the biggest engineering company in Kenya and targets 2000 SMEs. This in turn will create job opportunities for millions of Kenyans,” Kuria said.

He said that Trade and Investments PS Abubakar Hassan will form the Dongo Kundu Management Team that will handle and fast-track all matters regarding SEZ.

Last month, Ruto said the Dongo Kundu project will be complete in 24 months.

“I commit that inside 24 months, the project that will provide opportunities for the coastal region must be completed soon so that we can actualise the dreams of many people,” he said.

Dongo Kundu will comprise an export-processing zone, industrial parks, free trade zones and other auxiliary services such as tourism, meeting, conferencing and exhibitions.
