Second Lady Dorcas Gachagua has emphasised the importance of developing policies that protect and empower widows economically, allowing them to cope with life after the death of their spouses.
The Second Lady expressed concern about increased cases of widows being deprived of their property while attending the Osiligi Widows’ 3rd anniversary in Loitokitok.
She cites wife inheritance and ostracism in some communities as some of the traumatic experiences widows face, urging relevant authorities to take action.
Dorcas urged the Senate and National Assembly to expedite a bill addressing the plight of widows who lose their inheritance due to in-laws in order to protect the properties.
“We should make sure they (widows) have access to every credit that is available,” she said.
Filex Watakila, Kajiado County Commissioner, was also present and used the occasion to warn chiefs and their assistants against entertaining discriminating widows by taking and selling their rightful inheritance.
According to Watakila, government administrators are tasked with defending and protecting the rights and interests of widows in their jurisdiction.
“Where are you when widows are disinherited by their in-laws?”
