Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has criticized Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja for mishandling Wakulima Market traders, which led to protests on Thursday.
Gachagua revealed that traders reached out to him, reminding him of the promises he made alongside Sakaja during the 2022 election campaign.
“We committed to not disrupting their lives or undermining their economic activities,” Gachagua said in a statement, adding that the traders trusted them and deserved to be heard.
Nairobi County responded by explaining the need to relocate traders due to severe congestion at Wakulima Market, which has exceeded its capacity threefold.
The overcrowding has hindered operations and created health risks, including waterborne diseases.
The county government plans to move traders to Kangundo Market, which can accommodate over 5,000 traders and is currently underutilized.
The administration condemned the protests as politically motivated, accusing organizers of opportunism.
During the relocation, county staff were attacked, fire engines were stoned, and central stores were set on fire.
In response, Gachagua urged Sakaja to meet with the market’s leadership to find a solution that doesn’t harm the traders’ livelihoods.
“Please, consider sitting down with them to resolve the matter amicably,” the Deputy President advised.
Sakaja simply responded ”My Elder brother H.E. Rigathi Gachagua… You have my number.”
