The political rift between President William Ruto and his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, became more apparent on Wednesday when the President met with Members of Parliament from Nyeri, Gachagua’s home region, without him.
The meeting, held at State House in Nairobi, fueled speculation about deepening tensions between the two leaders.
Despite Gachagua’s prominence in Nyeri, he was notably absent from the discussions, which centered around key development projects in the region.
Sources indicate that President Ruto initiated the meeting to address local development, including road infrastructure, markets, and water programs.
Following the meeting, Ruto announced the elevation of Othaya’s Mwai Kibaki Hospital, formerly an annex of Kenyatta National Hospital, to parastatal status, complete with its own management board and independent budget.
“This will ensure the hospital is fully equipped to provide Universal Health Coverage,” Ruto stated.
Gachagua has recently faced scrutiny amid speculation of political differences with his boss.
His extensive tours across the Mt. Kenya region, aimed at consolidating support as a regional kingpin, have drawn criticism from lawmakers loyal to Ruto.
Gachagua’s allies, however, claim efforts are underway to undermine his influence within the government.
