Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out against Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s decision to relocate Public Service Vehicles from Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), claiming that the move will harm business.
DP Gachagua, speaking in his home county of Nyeri, said that the Governor should slow down and consult first before issuing such directives.
Gachagua stated that he met with the Kikuyu business community and asked them to support Sakaja’s bid for city governor, and that as a result, he will not allow decisions that affect their business.
“I have told the Nairobi Governor that we will have a sitting with him because we are the ones who elected him. I mobilized Kikuyus in Nairobi to vote for him and called him. Any decision that he makes which may affect business in Nairobi, we must first sit and discuss,” Gachagua said.
“Hatutaki speedy mingi sana, twende pole pole. Hio maneno ya kutoa matatu, hio haiwezekani. Sitaki tuanze kusumbua wafanyibiashara.”
At the same time, Gachagua lauded Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika for returning Matatus to Nakuru CBD after former Governor Lee Kinyanjui ejected them from town.
“Mimi napongeza Governor Kihika… pale Nakuru watu wetu walikua wamefukuzwa na yule mtu wa Azimio, Kinyanjui na akawapeleka msituni. Mimi nikaambia watu ndio wataamua. Mfukuzeni kama gavana mmpeleke msituuni na nyinyi mrudi town…si hivyo ndivyo watu wa Nakuru walifanya?” He posed amidst cheers.
During a meeting with Sacco leaders for Public Service Vehicles last month, Governor Sakaja stated that his plan to relocate long distance PSVs to the Green Park terminus is aimed at decongesting the CBD.
