Deputy President William Ruto has set aside his church harambees and other fundraising activities to comply with IEBC rules.
The DP announced he has temporarily paused the scheme till the end of the August 9 elections while speaking at a church service in Emuhaya, Vihiga county.
“Today we will not be contributing to the church building because the elections law does not allow it. But once the exercise is over, I commit myself that we will come back and ensure the completion of the church is done,” he said.
The Elections Act prohibits politicians from contributing to fundraising operations after the election date is gazetted.
This applies to all levels of government, including the president, governor, senator, member of Parliament, women’s representative, and MCA seat.
Wafula Chebukati, the chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, warned in December that any contestant who disobeyed the directive risked being disqualified.
The campaign harambees have been a hot topic among his rivals, who accuse him of distributing corruption proceeds to churches.
DP Ruto however, strongly defends his actions based on bible belief when it comes to contributing to churches.
