Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered the arrest of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over corruption allegations.
In a press briefing, the DPP has also ordered for the arrest of several county employees as well as other persons of interest for receiving monies and unlawful acquisition of public property, money, laundering and other economic crimes.
“Following comprehensive investigation by Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission(EACC) and upon receiving and independently reviewing the investigation file I have found sufficient evidence to warrant prosecution and I have therefore ordered for the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko,” DPP said.
The DPP has also expressed his concern in prosecuting the case of Sonko as he has severally made attempts to interfere with investigations and the use of goons to intimidate investigating officers
According to Haji the EACC has uncovered numerous instances of criminal conduct by Governor and that Sonko and the accused persons put their interests first before the interest of the residents of Nairobi.
Sonko was on 3rd September,2019 grilled by the EACC over irregularities in garbage collection tenders. This was after the Nairobi County Assembly Public Accounts Committee revealed that Ksh162 million paid to at least 11 contracted garbage collection firms could not be accounted for.
