The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has reaffirmed his office’s commitment to combating illegal petroleum production and consumption in Kenya.
During the national stakeholder conference on safety in Kenya’s electricity, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and petroleum sectors, DPP Renson Ingonga underlined the need of investigation agencies and prosecution in combating criminal elements in the sector.
He praised the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s (EPRA) “Kaa Safe Mtaani” campaign, emphasizing its importance in promoting community safety.
Ingonga also warned that as petroleum products use in Kenya rises, some individuals may engage in illegal practices that jeopardize both public safety and government efforts to control the industry.
“The growing demand for petroleum products presents significant challenges, and unfortunately, some individuals are exploiting this situation through illegal activities. These activities not only jeopardize the safety of consumers but also destabilize the efforts made by the government to maintain a secure and sustainable energy sector,” Ingonga stated.
The DPP assured stakeholders that his office will continue to collaborate with appropriate authorities to hold individuals involved in criminal acts accountable.
He emphasized the success of the Prosecution’s Guided Investigations strategy, which is a collaborative approach between the ODPP and investigating agencies. The method, he claimed, has resulted in the collection of solid evidence-based cases.
