Dr. Richard Leakey, the former Head of the Public Service, has been interred in a private family function.

According to a statement released by the family on Monday, Dr Leakey was buried on a hill along the Rift Valley according to his wish.

“We, this afternoon, interred his body at a place of his choosing, on his favourite ridge overlooking the majestic Rift Valley that he so loved,” Samira Leakey said.

She added that in line with COVID-19 Protocols, the public stays away from visiting Dr Leakey’s widow.

“As we struggle to come to terms with our loss, we are respectfully asking for a few moments of privacy so that we can mourn as a family before we celebrate his extraordinary life as a son of Kenya."

The family added that should anyone want to pen their condolences, they visit the National Museum and the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS).

DR. Richard Leakey died at the age of 77 years old.

He was a world-renowned Kenyan paleoanthropologist and conservationist, and served in a number of public service jobs, including Director of the National Museums of Kenya and Chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service Board of Directors.

Besides his distinguished career in public service, Dr Leakey is celebrated for his prominent role in Kenya’s vibrant civil society.
