Early Tuesday morning, a unidentified man climbed a high mobile phone booster mast in the heart of the CBD and refused to come down, despite desperate calls from onlookers and the police.
The man, nicknamed the “Voi Boosterman” by locals, was first seen around 6 a.m., having apparently ascended the mast during the night.
His persistent ascent to the top of the structure worried the crowd, which feared he might commit suicide.
As tensions rose, Taita Taveta County fire engines arrived on the scene, accompanied by a team of fire marshals, who immediately began devising a plan to safely rescue the man.
Meanwhile, concerned residents and authorities repeatedly pleaded with him to come down voluntarily.
Following a period of intense anxiety, the Taita Taveta fire department successfully rescued the man.
He was subsequently taken into custody for questioning at the Voi Police Station. Authorities are now working to establish the motive behind his dramatic act.
