A man identified as Peter Mwaura was on Thursday arraigned in court after being arrested for driving under the influence along the busy Thika–Garissa Road.
According to police records presented in court, Mwaura was subjected to a breathalyzer test that revealed an alcohol level of 75.8mg, well above the legal limit.
During the proceedings, Mwaura explained that the vehicle he had been driving did not belong to him.
He further told the court that the vehicle’s insurance had briefly expired but had been renewed by the owner just a day before his arrest.
The magistrate emphasized the seriousness of driving under the influence and the risks it poses to road users.
As a result, Mwaura was fined Ksh 30,000, with the court warning that drunk driving remains a major cause of road accidents and fatalities across the country.
The judgement serves as another reminder to motorists to adhere to traffic laws, maintain valid insurance, and avoid driving while intoxicated, as authorities continue efforts to curb rising incidents of road carnage.
