A police officer attached to President William Ruto’s motorcade has been formally charged with causing death by dangerous driving following a tragic accident along Ngong Road in Nairobi that claimed the life of a British national.
According to court documents, Police Constable George Mwangi Maina was behind the wheel of a Toyota Prado bearing dual registration numbers GKB 790J/KCY 351H at the time of the incident. The accident occurred on March 13, 2025, at approximately 12:30 PM near Adams Arcade.
The charge sheet alleges that Constable Maina drove the government vehicle recklessly, endangering the lives of other road users. The vehicle struck 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick Riches, a British national who was reportedly crossing the road. Riches succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Constable Maina appeared in court this week and was released on a cash bail of Ksh.150,000 as the case proceeds. The incident, which involved a vehicle from the presidential motorcade, sparked public interest and concern over road safety standards and accountability within government convoys.
Authorities have yet to issue further comment on the case, but legal proceedings are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
