In the early hours of Friday, an apparent drone attack struck central Tel Aviv, prompting an investigation by the Israeli military.
According to an official statement, an initial inquiry revealed that the explosion was caused by the falling of an “aerial target,” which was not intercepted due to human error.
The explosion resulted in the death of one person and left several others with minor injuries, as reported by Israeli emergency services.
The attack has been claimed by Yemen’s Houthi militants, a group backed by Iran.
The Houthis announced on social media that they would disclose details about a military operation targeting Tel Aviv.
In response to the incident, the Israeli military has increased air patrols, and the city’s mayor stated that they are on high alert, according to local media reports.
Alon, a resident of Tel Aviv, shared his experience with Haaretz:
“The whole building shook. My neighbours’ windows shattered, so I was sure something had hit the building. It was only when I went outside that I realized that several buildings had been damaged.”
The attack coincides with heightened tensions following the Israeli military’s confirmation of the killing of a senior Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon.
This development has led to increased hostilities, with Hezbollah and the Houthis expressing their actions as acts of solidarity with the Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
