Drunk Driver Who Left Cop for Dead in Hit-and-Run Faces Court

Albert Muhoro was today arraigned before the Thika Law Courts, facing three serious traffic-related charges; all of which occurred on July 19, 2025, at around 6:30 PM in the Ngolibaarea along the Thika-Garissa Road.

In the first charge, Muhoro is accused of driving a private motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, contrary to traffic laws. The charge sheet indicates he was driving a Nissan NV200 while intoxicated, with his alcohol level above the legal limit.

The second charge is failing to stop after an accident. The court was told that Muhoro fled the scene after causing an accident that left Corporal Francis Maingi, a traffic officer on duty, critically injured. CPL Maingi is currently admitted to Nairobi West Hospital’s ICU.

The third charge alleges that Muhoro was driving without a valid driving license at the time of the incident.

Police managed to arrest Muhoro about 10 kilometers from the scene along the Kilimambogo–Donyo Sabuk Road after PC Mbugua raised an alert. A roadblock was quickly set up, leading to his arrest. While Muhoro fled from the scene of the crime, there is no indication he attempted to evade arrest once officers moved to apprehend him.

The prosecution opposed bond, arguing that fleeing the scene and having no known place of residence makes Muhoro a flight risk. They requested that he be detained for seven days to allow for further investigations.

Magistrate Hon. Dr. Victor Wakumile granted the prosecution’s request, ordering that Muhoro be held in custody. He is scheduled to appear in court again on July 28, 2025.
