EACC Arrests 4 Traffic Police Extorting Money From Motorists At Outering Road

Four traffic police officers were apprehended by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday for extorting money from drivers on the Outering Road.

Four police officers were detained at Quarry Bus Station; three are stationed at Buruburu Police Station and one is at Embakasi Police Station.

They were arrested while allegedly extorting money.

Abraham Kiptoo of the Embakasi Police Station, Charo Katana of the Buruburu Police Station, Sarah Karimi of the Buruburu Police Station, and Burton Mathenge of the Buruburu Police Station were among those detained, according to a police report.

EACC detectives assert that at the time of the officers’ arrests, which were made in response to multiple complaints from motorists and members of the public, the police had amassed Ksh 15,830 in notes worth Ksh 50, Ksh 100, and Ksh 200 in less than 2 hours.

“At the time of the arrest, the four traffic officers had collected a total of KES15,820 in less than 2 hours,” EACC said.

According to one of the allegations, the cops were brazenly receiving bribes from private and public cars, either directly or through agents sent out for that reason, according to detectives.

According to a police report, “In some cases, drivers placed notes at specific parts of the vehicle, such as the driver’s door handle, while other drivers dropped notes for collection by the officers from the ground.”

“Others placed the cash in their driver’s licenses that they gave to traffic officers.”

Some of the accusations claimed that the convoluted bribery plan was to blame for the irregular traffic bottlenecks on the popular road.

Following their arrests, they were transported to the Integrity Centre police station where they gave statements before being freed on Ksh 10,000 cash bond each.

They are currently waiting for the investigation’s remaining components to be finished, including for the Director of Public Prosecutions to approve the recommendation to charge them with a crime and bring them before the Anti-Corruption Court.
