EACC Clarifies Misreported Figures in Taita Taveta Graft Case

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has clarified recent claims regarding the amounts involved in a graft case against four Taita Taveta County officials.

Responding to a media report, the EACC explained that the figure mentioned in court on Wednesday only reflected the charges brought against the accused, not the full amount implicated in the scheme.

The media had earlier misreported the sum, sparking confusion about the Ksh7 million originally stated by EACC.

The Commission emphasized that the actual amount allegedly embezzled by the officials remains a separate issue.

During the arraignment at the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court, Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku underscored that the figure of Ksh 7 million would be incorrect if based solely on the Ksh 4 million stated in the charge sheet.

Nonetheless, the charge sheet was not the central focus in the proceedings.

The case involves accusations of embezzling county funds meant for a World War I commemoration event, a significant occasion that draws international attention.

Investigations revealed that some vendors listed in the financial records denied providing any services, adding weight to the graft charges.

The accused remain in custody as the case proceeds.
