The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has launched investigations into bribery allegations against Hon. Stellah Bonareri Nyaboke Atambo, the Chief Magistrate of Thika Law Courts.
The probe follows multiple complaints alleging that she solicited and received bribes from accused persons in criminal cases before her court.
According to EACC, the magistrate is suspected of receiving various sums of money through Patrick Njeri Muriithi, a clerk in her court. Investigators believe that these funds were illicitly obtained from individuals seeking favorable rulings.
On Thursday, March 13, 2025, EACC, armed with search warrants, raided the residences of both the Chief Magistrate and the Clerk in search of crucial evidence. During the operation, detectives recovered Ksh 2,070,000 in cash, suspected to be proceeds of corruption, inside a laptop bag at Hon. Atambo’s residence. Several documents relevant to the investigation were also seized.
Following the searches, both Hon. Atambo and Mr. Muriithi were taken to EACC headquarters for interrogation and statement recording. The anti-corruption body has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation to establish the extent of the alleged bribery scheme and hold those responsible accountable.
The judiciary, often regarded as the last line of justice, has in the past faced criticism over corruption claims. The latest scandal puts the integrity of the justice system under fresh scrutiny, with legal experts calling for decisive action against any judicial officers found guilty of corruption.
EACC has urged the public to report any further information that may aid the investigation, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring accountability within the judiciary.
