EACC Wants 4.8 Billion Anti-Graft Budget

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) wants Ksh 4.8 billion to properly fight corruption, trace and recover assets, and hire people.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak said that the Commission was running on a short budget.

He added that the commission needed over 700 staff to beef up its workforce and speed up the agency’ permitted operations.

The EACC Boss lamented on how they had to hire staff on a constant budget while the existing ones are overstretched.

“We are mandated to investigate each corruption case reported to us and we have four staff in our Mombasa office, who are career investigators covering Kwale, Mombasa and Taita Taveta. We are underfunded and understaffed. Then there is a common perception that EACC is a money gobbling commission that isn’t worth its value,” Mbarak added.

According to him, the EACC has a 97 percent conviction rate based on case data from the DPP’s office, making it the most authoritative body in the battle against corruption. They don’t, however, stand on the roof and shout about it, he pointed out.
