The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, led by President William Ruto, has officially merged with the Amani National Congress (ANC).
The new entity, which will retain the UDA name, has announced its leadership lineup, marking a significant development in the country’s political landscape.
The merger, which was approved by the ANC in August 2024, brings together two of Kenya’s major parties, creating a formidable force in the country’s politics. The new UDA-ANC party has incorporated ANC’s identity symbols, including its logo, imagery, and topography, into its branding.
Cecily Mbarire, the UDA Chairperson, unveiled the new leadership during a press briefing at State House Nairobi on Friday. The Deputy Party Leader will be Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, who has also served as the acting ANC Party Leader. ANC Chairperson Kelvin Lunani will take on the role of Vice Chairman of the party.

Emuhaya Member of Parliament Omboko Milema, who previously held the position of ANC Secretary General, will now serve as the Deputy Secretary General of the party. The ANC Secretariat will also be integrated into the new party, ensuring a seamless transition.
The positions of party leader, chairperson, and secretary general of UDA remain unchanged, with President William Ruto at the helm. The merger is expected to strengthen Ruto’s position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The move has significant implications for Kenya’s politics, potentially shifting the balance of power and setting the stage for a major showdown in the upcoming elections. The UDA-ANC merger is seen as a strategic move to consolidate power and build a stronger coalition to challenge the ruling Jubilee party.
Merger Committee to Ensure Smooth Transition

Mbarire announced that a merger committee has been formed to oversee the integration process, which is expected to be completed within 90 days.
The committee will ensure that all merger activities, including harmonization of core values, rebranding, and membership recruitment drive, are carried out smoothly.
