East African Community Sends Verification Mission To Admit DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s dream of joining the East African Community (EAC) took another step ahead on Friday, when the bloc sent a verification mission to the central African country.

From June 25 to July 4, a team led by Christophe Bazivamo will be in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to review the country’s eligibility for membership in the EAC.

The team is made up of three experts from each partner state who are funded by the EAC Secretariat, as well as a maximum of two extra experts who are funded by the nominating Partner State.

It is anticipated to examine the DR Congo’s existing legal standing in international law and determine the government’s level of compliance with criteria for foreign country entry, among other things.

After the verification, a report will be written and delivered to the EAC Council of Ministers, who will subsequently present it to the EAC Heads of State Summit.

The chiefs of state will then decide whether or not to accept the Democratic Republic of Congo to the bloc.

Tshisekedi praised the EAC’s efforts on its integration goal, while emphasizing his country’s resolve to joining the EAC as soon as possible.

“The people of DR Congo would benefit because of the free movement of people from DR Congo other countries without a visa if they are fully in the EAC.”
