Twenty-two mall owners and property managers along Kipanga Athumani Street in Eastleigh have urged Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja to intervene and clear the road of hawkers and taxi drivers who have occupied the area, obstructing businesses.
Omar Abdi, the organising secretary of the Eastleigh Business District Association, stated that the congestion has persisted for years, making it difficult for shoppers to access the malls and for lorries to offload goods.
He noted that 5,200 shops have been affected, leading to declining sales.
With Ramadan approaching, business owners anticipate an influx of shoppers but fear the blocked entrances will deter customers.
Omar further alleged that some taxi operators are violent and harass shop owners when they attempt to create space for deliveries.
He also accused county officials of allowing the situation to continue for personal gain.
Mohamud Yusuf, chairman of the mall managers, said they have made multiple attempts to contact Governor Sakaja, including through their MCA, but have yet to receive a response.
He warned that if no action is taken, they will pursue legal action to resolve the matter.
