In an effort to promote inclusive education and ensure no child is left behind, stakeholders in the education sector converged in Machakos County for the launch of the SHINE Project, an initiative aimed at supporting learners living with disabilities.

The forum, held at a Machakos hotel, brought together education officers, development partners, teachers, parents, and special needs education stakeholders to deliberate on ways of improving access to quality education for children with disabilities.

Director of Special Education, Fred Haga, called upon parents and guardians to take children living with disabilities for assessment and enrolment in appropriate schools, noting that every learner deserves an opportunity to learn and nurture their talents.

Fred Haga emphasized that education is compulsory for all children, regardless of their condition, adding that early assessment helps learners receive the right support and placement.

TSC Deputy Director, Dr. Susan Thande, urged grassroots leaders and community stakeholders to sensitize parents on the importance of taking children living with disabilities to school, saying education remains a fundamental right for every child.

The SHINE Project is expected to strengthen inclusive learning environments and improve support systems for learners with special needs across the county.

ADDA Program Officer Acenia Kaburu revealed that 27 schools in Machakos County are set to benefit from the programme through infrastructural support, learning materials, and capacity building for teachers handling learners with disabilities.

Stakeholders at the meeting also underscored the importance of collaboration between parents, schools, and development partners in ensuring children living with disabilities access quality education and equal opportunities in society.

The initiative is expected to boost enrolment, retention, and academic development among learners with special needs while creating awareness on inclusive education within communities.
