Egg Prices Shoot Up By 25% On Reduced Imports

The price of eggs has increased by 25%, putting further strain on household budgets.

A crate of eggs now costs Sh450, up from Sh360 in early February, while one egg costs Sh15, up from Sh12 earlier.

Traders explain the rapid spike to a local scarcity as farmers reduce their herd owing to high feed prices.

The situation has deteriorated due to dwindling supply from Uganda as a result of intense border security that prevented eggs from being smuggled into the nation.

Since last year, the price of layered marsh has risen, with a 50 kilogramme bag from Unga Limited costing Sh3,100, up from Sh2,500 in March 2021.

As a result, the cost of production at the farm level has risen.
