Eight Killed as Train Slams into Kenya Pipeline Staff Bus

A tragic collision between a commuter bus and a train near Morendat Farm in Naivasha has left eight people dead and dozens injured.

The victims are believed to be employees of the Kenya Pipeline Company who were returning home after work.

The accident occurred shortly after 5 pm on Wednesday, just a few metres from the Nairobi Nakuru highway. According to police reports, the driver of the bus attempted to cross the railway line without checking for an oncoming train.

Witnesses said the train dragged the bus for more than 200 metres after impact.

Naivasha police chief Antony Keter confirmed the incident, stating that eight people died on the spot while scores of others were rushed to Naivasha Subcounty Hospital in critical condition. Rescue operations were led by police and Kenya Red Cross personnel, who responded quickly to help those trapped in the wreckage.

Transport along both the Naivasha Kasarani road and the Naivasha Nakuru railway line was brought to a halt as emergency crews worked at the scene.

A witness said visibility was extremely poor due to heavy rain at the time of the crash. “It was raining so hard you could barely see. The bus driver may not have seen the train coming,” he said.

The accident has raised serious concerns about railway crossing safety, particularly in areas with limited visibility and lack of warning systems. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise increased caution and patience when approaching railway lines.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether human error or poor infrastructure contributed to the deadly crash.
