Eldoret Man Confesses to Selling Bhang, Cites It as Only Source of Income

A middle-aged man stunned a courtroom in Eldoret after openly admitting to running a bhang (cannabis) business as his sole source of income.

Geoffrey Wanjala made the confession on Monday while appearing before Eldoret Resident Magistrate Daniel Sitati, stating that he had “nothing to hide” regarding his long-standing involvement in the trade, which he claimed was his only means of livelihood.

Wanjala was arrested on June 26, 2025, at his residence in Lower West Indies, on the outskirts of Eldoret’s central business district. The arrest was carried out by plainclothes officers from Central Police Station, acting on a tip-off from members of the public.

During a search of his home, officers discovered a consignment of harvested bhang with an estimated street value of Ksh.750,000, the court was told. The prosecution, led by Eric Waweru, said Wanjala attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended shortly after.

The prosecution has requested that the suspect be held for two weeks at the Eldoret GK Remand Prison, pending the outcome of forensic analysis by the government chemist to confirm the nature of the seized substance.

Magistrate Sitati granted the request and directed that Wanjala remain in custody until July 14, 2025, when the government chemist’s report is expected to be presented in court. Further proceedings will depend on the findings of the analysis.
