Elgeyo Marakwet’s livestock, fisheries, and cooperatives department aims to bring together all of the county’s dairy cooperatives to form a single dairy union.
The sole purpose of this will be to constructing a milk processing plant in the county.
Dr. Benson Kibore, the Chief Officer of Livestock, Fisheries, and Cooperatives, said the department is working on putting up a milk processor to assist maintain milk quality and enhance farmers’ incomes.
“We will set up a milk processing plant which we will link with a feed factory which will help push this value chain further into benefiting the dairy farmers,” he said.
“The coolers have greatly helped the farmers from incurring losses as they no longer dump milk because it takes a while before it goes bad and the quality of milk is also maintained,”
In addition to the processor, the government is considering establishing a laboratory to screen for cancer-causing aflatoxin.
