Detectives from the Elite Special Service Unit have been assigned to look into the whereabouts of an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official.
Wafula Chebukati, chair of the IEBC, announced on Friday that Embakasi East Returning Officer Daniel Musyoka had gone missing and asked the police for assistance in finding him.
Musyoka was last seen on Friday at his workstation at the East African School of Aviation tallying centre, according to the IEBC boss.
Musyoka and his security guard left his house around 9 a.m. and arrived at the tallying center around 9.45 a.m.
“He excused himself to make a phone call but did not return to the office,” Chebukati said at Bomas during an update on the elections.
Detectives from the Special Service Unit (SSU) and officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau went to the tallying center where Musyoka was last seen yesterday.
Security guards who were on duty the day Musyoka went missing were questioned by investigators.
Musyoka’s bodyguard from the Administration Police has recorded statements with the police.
According to preliminary police investigations, Musyoka’s mobile phone was switched off at around 9.50 a.m. in Embakasi.
When he went missing, the deputy returning officer assumed his duties.
The search has now been extended to Nakuru. The police want to confirm if Musyoka may have travelled home when left his workstation.
The disappearance of the poll officer is causing concern across the country, as it comes at a time when Kenyans are anxiously awaiting the release of election results.
