A memorable welcome ceremony was held on October 9 at the United Nations Complex in Nairobi to celebrate the appointment of Eliud Kipchoge as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Sports, Integrity, and Values.
The event drew over 200 attendees, including Kenyan government representatives, sports federation members, UN staff, and media. Notably, 45 schoolchildren from Nairobi and 50 members of the UNESCO Youth Network were also in attendance.
Kipchoge, born in Kenya’s Nandi District in 1984 and renowned as one of the greatest long-distance runners, expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am deeply honored and humbled to accept this role.
This moment reflects the power of sport to inspire, unite, and transform lives.” His remarkable career includes setting the marathon world record and winning multiple gold medals in the Olympics and World Championships, culminating in his historic sub-two-hour marathon in 2019.
In his new role, Kipchoge will focus on raising awareness about UNESCO’s initiatives in sports, education, and environmental sustainability. Louise Haxthausen, Director of UNESCO’s Regional Office in Nairobi, praised Kipchoge for embodying the organization’s core values. “Your actions will accelerate our commitment to leave no one behind,” she stated.
Minister Eva Maina emphasized Kenya’s desire to deepen its partnership with UNESCO, particularly in sports diplomacy to promote sustainable development. Kipchoge aims to use his platform to champion children’s education and environmental protection across Kenya and beyond.
