Eliud Owalo declares his net worth days after quitting Ruto’s govt

Former Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has declared that his personal net worth stands at approximately Ksh1 billion, just days after resigning from President William Ruto’s government as Deputy Chief of Staff and announcing his intention to run for president in the 2027 General Election.

Owalo disclosed on the night of Sunday, February 1, 2026, during an interview with one of the local TV stations, framing it as a statement of transparency as he positions himself for the country’s top seat.

“That is an interesting question. I am worth about 1 billion shillings right now,” Owalo said.

The revelation comes shortly after Owalo formally exited the Kenya Kwanza administration.

While he did not disclose how he has been able to accumulate the wealth over the years, Owalo’s current net worth reflects a growth of Ksh355 million from the time he first joined Ruto’s government in 2022.

While being vetted in October 2022 as a Cabinet Secretary nominee for Information, Communication, and Digital Economy, Owalo placed his net worth at Ksh645 million.

He said the wealth was in the form of residential houses in Nairobi and upcountry, a hotel, and four cars.

“My house in Nairobi is worth Ksh120 million. My residential house upcountry is worth Ksh70 million; I own land upcountry worth Ksh200 million and four cars worth about Ksh15 million,” Owalo said when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments.

“A hotel facility not fully complete, but is Ksh80 million as at now, though based on the bill of quantities, upon completion, it is worth Ksh293 million.”

At the time, Owalo also noted that he had invested heavily in commercial tree planting.

“I have ventured heavily into commercial tree planting, and as at now I estimate the value proposition is Ksh160 million. This comes to a total of Ksh645 million,” he said.

Owalo has positioned himself as a reformist candidate, arguing that Kenya needs new leadership focused on accountability, economic restructuring, and inclusive governance.

He has also indicated that his campaign will not be anchored on ethnic mobilisation but on policy-driven politics.

The former late Raila Odinga’s political strategist has also revealed that he will unveil his own political party within the month of February 2026.
