ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo has promised to help Gor Mahia overcome ongoing financial difficulties.
Speaking at the club’s breakfast meeting in a Nairobi hotel on Tuesday, Owalo urged the private sector to partner with community clubs such as Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards rather than funding institutional teams ‘that do not have fan bases’.
The CS, an avid football fan, also contributed Sh800,000 to the club.
The money given to club captain Philemon Otieno will be distributed to the players as winning bonuses for the last five league games.
The CS has also promised to provide the club with a bus.
“I watched the (league) game against Kenya Police at the weekend and was impressed with the team’s performances. I urge the club’s management not to make many changes to the playing unit. These players can emulate the squad of 1987,” observed Owalo.
Gor, also known as K’Ogalo, is Kenya’s most successful football club, having won a record 19 league titles.
However, the team has been plagued by financial difficulties for the better part of the last decade, and it now trails regional rivals such as Simba SC, Young Africans (Tanzania), Vipers (Uganda), El Merreikh and Al Hilal (Sudan), and Zesco United (Zambia).
With eight games remaining in the season, Gor leads the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title with 56 points from 26 matches, two points ahead of Tusker.
