Billionaire Elon Musk has launched a blistering attack on President Donald Trump’s flagship budget package — the “One Big Beautiful Bill” — just days after stepping down from a high-profile advisory role in the Trump administration.
Calling the legislation a “disgusting abomination,” Musk criticized the bill’s $4 trillion debt ceiling lift and what he called “outrageous, pork-filled” spending.
“Shame on those who voted for it,” Musk wrote in a series of posts, warning that the package would “bankrupt America.”
The bill narrowly passed the House on May 22 by a 215–214 vote, with only two Republicans Reps. Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson — voting against it alongside a united Democratic front.
The Senate, where Republicans hold a slim majority, is expected to vote in the coming days.
The legislation extends Trump-era tax cuts and pours billions into border wall construction, but critics say it comes at a steep cost: slashing Medicaid by $698 billion and cutting $267 billion from food assistance programs.
Musk, who led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in Trump’s administration, said the bill undermines his team’s cost-cutting work. “A bill can be big or beautiful — not both,” he told CBS.
His remarks have exposed cracks within the GOP, with Sen. Rand Paul backing Musk and calling the bill a “$5 trillion mistake.”
Trump hit back, branding Paul’s views “crazy” and hailing the bill as a “BIG GROWTH BILL.”
