Employee Jailed For Three Years For Threatening To Kill His Employer

A Nairobi Court has sentenced an Employee to serve three years in jail for threatening to kill his employer.

Zephaniah Kipkirui Cheruiyot was convicted and sentenced in his own plea of guilty after confessing before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi at Milimani Law courts that on September 21, 2023, he threatened to kill his employer Magret Koech for delaying his salary.

According to the prosecution, on September 21, 2023, Zephaniah caused his employer Magret Koech to receive a threatening message.

“…what is remaining is to inform the police that I chop your head unless you pay me my money 384,000 KHS no less no more I Zephaniah Kipkirui Cheruiyot so help me God” reads the text send to Koech.

The suspect said that his employer had delayed his salary for years and although she was patient with her, she deliberately refused to pay him.

In mitigation, he asked for mercy saying he was only acting under emotion after his employer persistently ignored him.

In ruling the Magistrate said he had considered that the suspect was a first offender, however, the cases of employees killing their employers have been on the rise hence a need to issue a deterring sentence.

” I have taken into consideration that he is a first offender, I have also taken his mitigation into consideration, however, the cases of employees threatening to kill their employers have been rampant, this is a serious offence and the convict will serve three years in prison he has a right of appeal within fourteen days.” ruled the Magistrate.
