England EFL ROUND UP: Carabao Cup summary

Kai Havertz’s hat-trick in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup thrashing of Barnsley will be the “first of many great nights” for him, says Blues boss Frank Lampard.

It was the 21-year-old Germany international’s first goals for the club after arriving from Bayer Leverkusen for £71m earlier this month.

Tammy Abraham put the Blues ahead and had a role in all of Havertz’s goals.

Ross Barkley and Olivier Giroud were also on target as the hosts eased into the fourth round at Stamford Bridge.

“I’m delighted with Kai,” said Lampard.

“It was everything I wanted the night to be for him. Because Kai has had no pre-season and signing for the club took a few days out for him as well.”

Toffees ease through

Fleetwood 2-5 Everton

Everton’s strong start to the season continued with a 5-2 win at League One Fleetwood, their fourth successive victory in all competitions.

Richarlison headed the Toffees ahead and then doubled their lead after a one-two with Alex Iwobi.

Mark Duffy gave Fleetwood hope at the start of the second half but Iwobi swept home from eight yards a minute later.

Callum Camps scored a bicycle kick for Joey Barton’s side before Bernard killed the game off with a fine volley and Moise Kean netted in injury time.

However, there will be question marks about Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s performance again, as he was culpable for both Fleetwood goals.

The Toffees will host David Moyes’ West Ham in the next round.

Magpies run riot

Morecambe 0-7 Newcastle

It was a record breaking night for Newcastle as they beat League Two Morecambe 7 (seven)-0.

Steve Bruce’s side were 5-0 up by half-time, the first time they have scored five goals in the first half since 1993.

Joelinton scored twice for the Magpies, with Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy, Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles and a Sam Lavelle own goal adding to the tally.

Newcastle now travel to League Two Newport in the fourth round.

Gunners knock out Leicester

Leicester 0-2 Arsenal

In the evening’s only all-Premier League tie, Arsenal edged past Leicester thanks to a Christian Fuchs own goal and Eddie Nketiah’s close-range finish.

There was little Fuchs could do as Nicolas Pepe’s angled effort hit him after coming off the post and went in.

Nketiah settled the tie in the closing stages, stabbing in after fine work from substitute Hector Bellerin.

It continues Arsenal’s strong start to the season, which has seen them lift the Community Shield and win back-to-back Premier League matches.

The Gunners will play Liverpool in round four if the Premier League champions beat League One Lincoln tonight.

It was everything I wanted the night to be for him’

Chelsea 6-0 Barnsley

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard was understandably pleased with Kai Havertz’s performance against Barnsley.

I’m delighted with Kai,” said Lampard. “It was everything I wanted the night to be for him. Because Kai has had no pre-season and signing for the club took a few days out for him as well.”

“Tonight was a great exercise for him to see how we want to work off the ball, for him to be a part of that.

“He made a great recovery tackle for Ross’ goal, and then to also just have some freedom on the ball and roam in more central areas.

“I thought it was a great combination with Tammy and I was pleased with the way he grew into the game in terms of confidence. It was a great night for Kai, and the first of many for him.”
