The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has launched a nationwide safety campaign, *Kaa Safe Mtaani*, aimed at reducing electrical and petroleum-related accidents in Kenya.
The campaign will be spearheaded by the newly formed Coalition for Safety (C4S), an initiative mandated to promote awareness and compliance across the energy sector.
Announcing the campaign during a stakeholder meeting on Thursday, EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo emphasized the importance of safety in the country’s energy and petroleum industries.
“The recent tragedy in Mradi at Embakasi in February 2024, which claimed lives, serves as a painful reminder that we cannot afford to be complacent,” he said.
According to EPRA, 153 electrical accidents were reported as of June 2024, a significant increase from 116 cases in 2023.
These incidents resulted in 98 deaths and 61 injuries. The campaign will focus on promoting safety awareness, enforcing compliance with energy regulations, and working with industry players, government agencies, and civil societies to mitigate risks.
C4S aims to hold stakeholders accountable while educating the public on the dangers of improper energy use, ensuring that safety remains a top priority across Kenya’s energy and petroleum sectors.
