Eric Omondi Leads Anti-Fuel Hike Protests in Nairobi CBD, Dumps Jerricans on Road

By Andrew Kariuki

Comedian and activist Eric Omondi staged dramatic anti-fuel hike protests in Nairobi’s Central Business District after he and a group of demonstrators dumped several 20-liter jerricans onto a road from a lorry in protest against the latest increase in fuel prices.

Videos and images circulating online showed the activist standing on top of the vehicle alongside protesters as dozens of empty yellow jerricans were thrown onto the road, briefly disrupting traffic and attracting crowds of onlookers.

The protests come amid growing public anger following the latest fuel price review announced by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), which saw significant increases in the prices of Super Petrol and Diesel.

Omondi, who has previously participated in demonstrations over the cost of living and taxation, accused the government of overburdening ordinary Kenyans through high fuel prices and increased taxes.

The symbolic jerrican protest appeared aimed at highlighting the impact of rising fuel costs on transport, food prices and household expenses across the country.

Police officers were later seen monitoring the situation as traffic flow in parts of the CBD was temporarily affected during the demonstration.

The protests also come as matatu operators and commuters continue expressing frustration over increasing transport costs linked to the latest fuel price adjustments.
