Edgar Lungu, the former president of Zambia, claimed that the government was targeting him after his wife was called in for questioning.
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) is seeking Esther Lungu for questioning in relation to 15 flats she owns in Lusaka.
She disputes the commission’s claim that the properties may have been obtained illegally.
Speaking to lawmakers from the Patriotic Front, the previous government’s party, who visited him and his wife out of solidarity, Mr. Lungu claimed that his family was unfairly being singled out for criticism.
On the other hand, Mrs. Lungu has affirmed her innocence.
Last year, the United Party for National Development of Hakainde Hichilema defeated Mr. Lungu’s party for the presidency.
As part of the new government’s campaign against corruption, a number of former government officials have been showing up for questioning with some of their property seized.
