The European Union (EU) has donated equipment worth Sh207 million to improve operations and connectivity at the One-Stop Border Post in Moyale.

This initiative aims to boost cross-border trade and facilitate smoother movement of goods and people between Kenya and Ethiopia.

Trade Principal Secretary Alfred K’ombudo, speaking during the handover on Tuesday, highlighted the equipment’s role in enhancing safety and efficiency at the border.

“This equipment will ensure safe and smart trading experiences, which is vital for cross-border trade,” he said.

The donation supports regional integration under the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) framework, which seeks to promote the free movement of people, goods, and services across the region.

Kenya previously signed an agreement with Comesa in May 2023 to upgrade trade facilitation infrastructure at the Moyale border.

K’ombudo emphasized the EU’s ongoing commitment to reducing non-tariff barriers and streamlining trade processes.

The equipment forms part of the EU-funded Sh7.4 billion Trade Facilitation Programme, which is critical to establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

“Comesa’s efforts to lower trade costs and improve border management are central to the AfCFTA vision,” K’ombudo added.
