According to Finland’s Prime Minister, without the United States, Europe would be in trouble.
The Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, said, Europe is “not strong enough” to stand up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on its own, and must rely on US assistance.
During a visit to Australia, the incoming NATO member’s leader stated that Europe’s defenses must be strengthened.
“I’m going to be brutally honest with you: Europe isn’t strong enough right now,” she admitted.
“Without the United States, we’d be in big trouble.”
By far the largest provider of military assistance to Ukraine is the United States.
According to a research briefing issued last month by the UK’s House of Commons, it has committed $18.6 billion (€17.7 billion; £15.2 billion) in support since the start of the war in February.
According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the European Union is the second largest donor, followed by the United Kingdom.
However, their contributions are dwarfed by those of the United States.
Ms. Marin also stated that, with European countries’ military stocks depleting as they supply Ukraine, more needed to be done to strengthen European defenses.
Ms. Marin said on Friday at the Lowy Institute think tank in Sydney, “The United States has given a lot of weapons, a lot of financial aid, a lot of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, and Europe isn’t strong enough yet.”
She added that Europe must ensure that it is “building those capabilities in terms of European defense, European defense industry, and ensuring that we can cope in various types of situations.”
