Europe: Police, Citizens Clash Over COVID Restrictions

Protests over the new Covid-19 restrictions in Europe became violent over the weekend, as the number of cases on the continent continues to grow.

On Saturday, riots broke out in The Hague against the Dutch government’s new coronavirus restrictions. riot police use water cannons and charge groups of demonstrators, according to video from the incident.

Last Saturday, the Netherlands re-entered a three-week partial lockdown, and it now plans to prohibit unvaccinated people from visiting certain places.

During the clashes in The Hague, five police officers were hurt, with one being brought to the hospital with a concussion and two others having hearing impairment from the loud pyrotechnics, according to authorities.

In other news, 40,000 people crammed the streets of Vienna on Saturday in the country’s largest coronavirus-related protest to yet.

During a press conference on Sunday, Franz Eigner, Vice President of the Vienna Authorities, said that police tried to de-escalate the protest and that when the “mood was about to flip,” they ceased fining people who did not wear facemasks.

According to Eigner, several police personnel was sprayed with an “unidentified substance,” and demonstrators were attempting to blind a helicopter with a laser.

During the news conference, Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said that a tiny minority of protesters were “particularly prone to violence,” which he linked to the “right-wing extremist scene.”
