Ex-NSSF Officials Face Jail term Over 1.2 Billion Theft

Six former officers of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) have been found guilty of defrauding the agency of Kshs.1.2 billion by a Nairobi court.

Out of the nine persons who had been charged in court for the loss of pension money at the agency, the judge concluded that the six have a case to answer.

Francis Moturi Zuriels, William Githaiga Murungu, David Murungu Githaiga, Wilfred Munyoro Weru, Isaac Nyakundi Nyamongo, and Discount Securities Limited were found to have conspired to defraud NSSF.

Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi of the anti-corruption court ruled that the five were guilty as charged.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) noted that the accused conspired to defraud the public and the National Social Security Fund of Kenya shillings 1,201,143,372.40 on various dates between August 25, 2004 and July 20, 2007.

The staffers are said to have purchased various quantities of shares of various banks such as the Kenya Commercial Bank, Barclays Bank of Kenya, Standard Chartered Bank, and the Kenya Commercial Bank.

The accused did this on behalf of the National Social Security Fund, according to documents filed in court by EACC, even though no shares had been purchased.
