Former Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia has been nominated by Murang’a Governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata to serve as the chairperson of the Murang’a County Public Service Board.
According to a communication tabled before the Murang’a County Assembly on June 18, Governor Kang’ata forwarded Macharia’s name alongside four others to fill key positions in the powerful board that oversees recruitment, promotions, and disciplinary action for county public servants.
If approved by the Assembly, Macharia will take up the position for a renewable five-year term, commencing immediately after her exit from the TSC on June 30, 2025.
Her appointment comes after nearly a decade of steering Kenya’s national teachers’ employer, where she was the first woman to serve as CEO.
Joining her on the board, subject to vetting, are Dr. Louis Mwende Musikali, Johnson Kang’ethe Kinyua, and Dr. Brian Lishenga Makamu as board members. Oscar Kimani Gathura has been nominated as Secretary.
The County Assembly noted that the names had been submitted to the Governance, Labour and Social Welfare, and Justice and Legal Affairs Committee for vetting, in line with Standing Order 47.
The committee is expected to conduct public approval hearings before submitting its report to the full House.
Dr. Macharia’s nomination coincides with an ongoing leadership transition at TSC, where Eveleen Mitei, Deputy Head of the Human Resources Directorate, was named Acting CEO through an internal memo dated June 1.
However, the recruitment of a substantive CEO has since hit a legal snag after a petition by Thomas Oyugi prompted the Employment and Labour Relations Court to suspend the process over alleged constitutional violations and discriminatory recruitment criteria.
The court is set to determine the legality of the 21-day application window and whether the vacancy was properly declared.
If her appointment is confirmed, Dr. Macharia’s next chapter will mark a return to her home county to oversee public service delivery at the grassroots level.
