Detectives in Nairobi have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a senior Kenya Defence Forces officer and swindled desperate young people seeking entry into the military.
The suspect, identified as Joshua Mutui Muimi, is accused of styling himself as a KDF brigadier and running a recruitment scam that promised successful admission into the Recruit Training School in Eldoret.
Officers from the Parklands directorate moved in on the suspect after receiving intelligence reports about his activities. He was arrested inside his rented apartment in Kilimani, where investigators found him dressed in full Kenya Air Force uniform despite having no military background whatsoever.
A detailed search of the residence uncovered a collection of forged documents and other incriminating items.
Among the evidence were documents marked with the Ministry of Defence logo, six fake admission letters that all carried the same serial number, seven fingerprint forms and a manual linked to a foreign ammunition manufacturer.
Detectives say the forged letters were used to convince victims that they had secured places at the training school in exchange for cash.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has stated that the man had been exploiting the hopes of young recruits by offering guaranteed entry into the military for a fee.
The operation appears to have targeted individuals who were unaware that genuine recruitment is conducted at no cost and under strict supervision by the KDF.
Muimi is currently in custody as detectives complete their investigations before presenting him in court.
The DCI has urged members of the public to be cautious and to avoid individuals who claim to offer shortcuts into the security services.
