Families of suspected arsonists who allegedly torched a nightclub owned by Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi are pleading for the release of their relatives, who have been in remand for over two months.
The suspects, including high school students, were arrested following the June 2024 protests in Eldoret that led to the vandalism of Timba XO club.
The families, many of whom are unable to afford the Ksh 300,000 bond set for each suspect, have been appealing to MP Sudi for mercy.
They claim that Sudi had publicly promised to forgive those involved, but their loved ones remain detained at Eldoret Maximum Prison.
“We are asking Oscar Sudi to please have mercy on us. We have been coming here every day after work, but we are still taken in circles,” said Brian Luta, a resident of Eldoret.
Another resident, Christopher Barno, expressed frustration at the repeated delays in securing their release.
Mercy Chebet, whose brother is among the detained, urged Sudi to fulfill his promise of forgiveness. “If indeed he forgave them, we are asking him to do so and please forgive us if we wronged him,” she pleaded.
The suspects were charged with stealing, vandalism, and destroying property worth Ksh80 million at the club during the protests.
