Gengetone artist Shalkido, best known for his role in the popular group Sailors Gang, has tragically passed away following a grisly road accident on Sunday.
Shalkido succumbed to his injuries hours after being declared brain dead by doctors at Kenyatta University Hospital, where he had been admitted to the ICU.
According to earlier statements by TV host Obinna, the artist was involved in a hit-and-run accident that left him with severe head injuries, internal bleeding, and a broken bone.
The accident occurred just as Shalkido, a father of one, was working to rebuild his music career after a challenging period. Known for his vibrant energy and lyrical flow, Shalkido had recently been making efforts to get his life and artistry back on track before the tragedy struck.
Obinna, who rushed to the hospital upon receiving news of the accident, expressed his heartbreak after witnessing the artist’s condition and the confusion surrounding his treatment.
“We are in KU referral hospital, and things are not looking up because of a few factors. When we came in, the nurses were good, but when we were referred to one doctor called Dr Zipora, things got complicated.” Obinna said.
He went on to describe a series of frustrating hospital experiences that made it difficult for the family to get updates or authorisation to transfer the patient to another facility.
“When we asked the doctor for updates, she said we had to wait for the nurse to come. Then later, when we tried to get a transfer document, they told us we needed approval from the doctor. When I went back, they said we first had to find another hospital, get a bed, an ambulance, and a neurosurgeon before we could move him,” he added.
Shalkido’s untimely death marks a painful loss for the Kenyan music industry, especially the Gengetone community, which had embraced him as one of its pioneering voices.
