Government spokesman Cyrus Oguna has refuted claims that an internet shutdown is expected over a fiber cable relocation exercise.
In a statement seen by Uzalendo News, the government rebuked a headline on a local newspaper, saying the internet service will be uninterrupted.
“The headline is misleading and we wish to clarify that the relocation of internet-related infrastructure to allow for the construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit highway will not in any way disrupt the provision of internet services.”
Oguna added that the exercise will put be seamless, urging the public not to panic.
“Internet users are therefore hereby, advised not to panic as the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, working in conjunction with the Ministry of Infrastructure, through KENHA, have devised a mechanism to ensure zero effect on internet supply during this permanent relocation of the fiber optic cable to pave way for road construction.“
Principal Secretary, State Department for ICT and Innovation Mr. Jerome Ochieng’, said the project has been divided into four sections for fast, effective, and efficient implementation of the relocation of services.
The cable movement will pave way for the multi-billion highway that forms part of the mega Nakuru to Mau Summit road.
VINCI Consortium of France signed the mega-deal to finance the construction of the 633 kilometers section.
The works include the construction of a 4-kilometer viaduct (elevated highway) through Nakuru Town, and the construction and improvement of interchanges along the highway.
The mega project will enhance the faster movement of cargo in the Northern corridor to Uganda, DRC, and Rwanda.
